Fans scribble Davis memorials outside Burbank home

Friends and admirers of the late Dodgers All Star Willie Davis who passed away Tuesday have been leaving touching comments and thoughts etched in chalk on the sidewalk in front of his apartment on the 1900 block of Victory Boulevard.

Davis, a popular figure around the neighborhood, could often be seen strolling the streets with a golf club in his hand, smiling at friends and chatting with business owners about his long and productive seasons with the Dodgers organization.

Interim role turns permanent

The Rev. Clifford L. “Skip” Lindeman was formally installed as pastor and teacher of La Cañada Congregational Church during a special service Sunday afternoon, marking the end of Lindeman’s seven-year tenure as the church’s interim pastor.

Moments before services were scheduled to begin, Lindeman was found in the church’s Fireside Room, talking with colleagues. Asked what going through his mind seconds before entering the sanctuary, Lindeman said: “I am relieved and very grateful. I am grateful for the love of the people of this church.”

La Cañada Congregational Church Moderator Priscilla Garcia began the service with a statement that seemed to echo what was on everyone’s minds: “Thank you for joining us on this very special day, one that we have been waiting for, for seven-and-a-half-years,” she said, as the congregation laughed.

Evacuation orders lifted

From the Los Angeles Times:

Evacuation orders issued to nearly 200 homes in the La Crescenta and La Canada Flintridge areas were lifted Saturday morning, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

La Canada Flintridge residents living in the Paradise Valley area will have to show identification in order to return to their homes, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Nicole Nishida.

DOWNTOWN — Burbank school board members today voted unanimously to appoint a new district superintendent, less than three months after Supt. Kevin Jolly announced his resignation, effective June 30, after just six months on the job.

Visalia Unified School District Supt. Stan Carrizosa will take over Burbank Unified July 1 on a four-year contract after board members approved his $235,000 annual salary.

VCA Animal Hospitals offers free boarding

VCA Animal Hospital facilities located near the northeastern Los Angeles areas of La Crescenta, Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge and Altadena are offering free boarding for animals whose families are being evacuated or displaced from their homes as a result of the current rainstorms.

“For the more than 1,200 residents facing mandatory evacuations or potential loss of their homes, VCA is committed to help by providing free boarding for their pets so they can focus their efforts on managing personal and family issues,” said Art Antin, chief operating officer of VCA Animal Hospitals. “VCA wants everyone affected to know that during this difficult time, they have this free boarding option to keep their pets safe.”

Boarding assistance for pets is based on space availability at participating hospitals. Owners can call their local VCA in advance to ensure that the facility has space.

Muddy run-off starting to bring rocks

Muddy water coming off the barren hillsides of Deukmejian Wilderness Park has started to deposit debris on roadways, officials said.

Quarter-sized rocks have started to come onto Markridge Drive near the park, but so far, much of the muddy run-off has been contained within street gutters, city officials said.

Martirosyan beats Ouma by decision

Vanes “The Nightmare” Martirosyan improved to 27-0 on Saturday night with a 10-round unanimous decision over Kassim “The Dream” Ouma (26-7-1) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Martirosyan, a Glendale resident, defended his NABF and NABO light middleweight titles and perhaps shortened the road to an eventual world title shot by stopping the former IBF world titlist, who gave Martirosyan quite a fight.

Two judges scored the fight, 97-93, while a third had it 97-92. The News-Press scored the fight, 97-93, in favor of Martirosyan.

La Cañada-based Sports Chalet joins Haiti relief effort

La Cañada-based sporting goods chain Sports Chalet will join dozens of government offices and nonprofit agencies in bringing much-needed supplies to Haiti, company officials announced Thursday.

In partnership with charity Soles4Soles, the retail giant will donate 250,000 pairs of shoes, along with other necessities including food, water and medical supplies, to the affected residents of Port-au-Prince.
