Glendale Water & Power to host meeting on smart meters

Glendale Water & Power will host a town hall community meeting Sept. 1 to provide information on the smart electric and water meters that are set to begin citywide installation this fall. The meters, a major part of the more than $30 million Smart Grid project approved by the City Council last year, will allow customers to track electric and water usage in real-time. Crews have already installed the meters at select households during a test phase earlier this year. The meeting will take place Wednesday from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Pacific Community Center, Sycamore Room, at 501 South Pacific Ave. Two additional meetings will be held on Sept. 29 and Sept. 30. On Saturday, the Bordens, who have been married for 39 years, sat by a different '56 Chevy that Steve spent six years restoring. "He's always worked on cars, from the moment I met him until now," she said. Gatto to host ‘government fair’ at Burbank Farmers Market

Gatto is scheduled to be at the Burbank Farmers Market at the corner of Orange Grove Boulevard and Third Street from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, along with representatives of the California Employment Development Department, the California Highway Patrol, the Public Utilities Commission, the Department of Consumer Affairs and other agencies.

History tied to inaugural film festival

Films that have historical ties to the area will be screened over two nights in an inaugural film festival at 7:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 27 and 28, in the parking lot next to Andersen's Pet Store, 2218 Honolulu Ave., Montrose. The family-friendly screenings will take place on the former site of the Montrose Theatre. Friday's film is singer/actor Dennis Morgan's all-American musical "My Wild Irish Rose." Morgan was a resident of the Alta Canyada area. During the 1940s and '50s he was active in the community. He was honorary mayor of the Crescenta-Canada Valley, founder of the Montrose Christmas Parade and led the fund-raising for Two Strike Park. Saturday's feature "The High and the Mighty" stars John Wayne, who grew up in Glendale. After attending Glendale High School, he attended USC. He became a stunt man in early Westerns and later the biggest star of the genre.

President Obama due in Los Angeles on Monday

From the Los Angeles Times President Obama is scheduled to visit Los Angeles on Monday afternoon to help raise money for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, according to variety.com. He is slated to attend a fundraiser at the home of "ER" and "The West Wing" executive producer John Wells and his wife, Marilyn. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), chairman of the committee, also are expected to attend, the website said. The cocktail and dinner costs $2,500 per person, the website said. The president is expected to land at LAX at 4:10, according to his schedule. --Joe Mozingo
