AQMD to plant 500,000 trees in Station fire burn area

The South Coast Air Quality Management District will provide $1.5 million to plant new trees in the burn area of the Station fire, officials said. The money comes from Chevron, which paid $1.5 million as a carbon emissions fee for expansion to its El Segundo plant. Officials with the AQMD announced on Friday the money will go to planting approximately 500,000 trees in the parts of Angeles National Forest affected  by the Station fire. The new trees will be planted next spring.

The treat, which was cooked and displayed at the center’s field, broke the previous record of 2,500 pounds by weighing in at a hefty 10,460 pounds. The center netted about $5,000, after expenses. ... Counterfeiters using fake $100s in La Cañada

The Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station sent out a notice to businesses warning owners and their employees of the distribution of fake $100 bills in the area. On Feb. 19, three counterfeit $100 bills were used to make a purchase at the Sport Chalet in Town Center. On March 4, another counterfeit $100 was used for a purchase at the Kentucky Fried Chicken on the 2200 block of Foothill Boulevard. "Please advise your business to take extra precaution when accepting $100 bills," said La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce CEO Pat Anderson in an e-mail. "Always look for the water mark on the bills." The suspect from the Sport Chalet was caught on surveillance video. He's described as a male, Hispanic, 5 foot 6, 30-40 years old with black hair.

La Cañada Community Center attempts to build largest Rice Krispie for TV show

The Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge will attempt to build the world’s largest Rice Krispie treat this week. The event will be filmed as the pilot for a new television program on TLC, called Mega Bites, with the treats being sold on Sunday as part of a fundraiser. “The Center has to get $100,000 every year [through fundraisers and grants],” said La Crescenta resident Wendy Alane Smith, whose two children have attended classes and camps at the center. They have to do everything they can to keep it open.” “The show came about by Beyond Productions,” said TLC Director of Productions Eric Black. “They do ‘Mythbusters’ for Discovery Channel. Cat rescue group seeks donations

LCJBSA hosts opening day this Sunday

Opening day for the La Cañada Junior Baseball Softball Assn. will be held at the La Cañada High baseball field this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A parade of the teams will start at 1 p.m. and La Cañada Mayor Laura Olhasso will throw out the honorary first pitch. The event will feature carnival game booths and an In 'n' Out food truck.  The players will participate in a home run derby and a golden arm competition. "We'll have 900 kids and about 1500 hamburgers," LCJBSA board member Jack Johnson said. "We're looking forward to another great year."
