Clouds opened up from time to time Saturday in La Crescenta. In La Cañada Flintridge, residents inspected the Mullally Debris Basin on Manistee Drive in the Paradise Valley neighborhood after a short but strong downpour with lightning and small hail.

Luther Burbank Middle School students planted tress Friday in honor of Luther Burbank’s birthday, the school’s namesake. A botanist and horticulturalist, Burbank discovered the Shasta daisy, elephant garlic and Russet potato among other plants. The city of Burbank is named after 19th-century dentist David Burbank.
About a 20 minute walk up the Hall Beckley Canyon Recreation Area trail leads to a small and precipitous ridge trail where wild flowers are in full bloom in the hills of La Cañada Flintridge. There are two access points to the area overlooking the city below with views out past downtown L.A. Burbank High School teachers and students on National Day of Action protested cuts to education Thursday morning.
The Fine Arts Federation of Burbank “Fiesta of Art” Membership Show opens Friday at the Creative Arts Center Gallery in Burbank at 1100 W. Clark Ave. The juried mixed-media exhibit representing more than 60 artists will include paintings, sculptures, pottery, collages and photography.
Tenants for about a half-dozen apartment buildings who were evacuated after authorities discovered a possible pipe bomb in the intersection of Harvey Drive and Wilson Terrace were allowed to return at about 9 a.m. after it was determined to be a false alarm.
The pipe was capped at either end, but a Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department bomb squad discovered that it was empty using a remote-controlled robot.
The scare shut down multiple streets and offramps for the Glendale (2) and Ventura (134) freeways during the morning commute, and prompted authorities to evacuate several nearby apartment complexes as a precaution.
