Burroughs graduate Wong earns NAIA Gold Glove award

12:00 pm, Jun 11th, 2010 Written by Jeff Tully burbank sports Add a Comment
Throughout his youth baseball career, Terrell Wong played second base. However, when he arrived at Burroughs High as a freshman, then-coach Tom Crowther thought Wong would make a talented outfielder. "It was tough that first year to switch positions," Wong said. "I was used to second base and throwing side-armed. I worked on my arm for a year, throwing long-toss just about every day." Wong's arm is just one aspect of his defensive strength that made him a successful center fielder at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. He was rewarded for his defensive prowess last week when Wong was named to the 2010 Rawlings National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics Gold Glove Team.

All three area boys' baseball teams that made the CIF Southern Section playoffs had to play wild-card games Tuesday. The Guards will take on host Vasquez at 3:15 p.m. Friday. Burbank and Burroughs weren't as fortunate. Bell-Jeff wins first softball championship in 17 years

2:51 pm, May 14th, 2010 Written by Jeff Tully burbank sports Add a Comment
The Bellarmine-Jefferson High softball team wasn't about to share a league championship this season. With a dramatic come-from-behind win Thursday against St. Matthias at Gross Park, the Guards captured the outright Santa Cruz League title by way of a thrilling 8-7 victory. It is the program's first championship in 17 years. A loss would have had Bell-Jeff and the Victorians share the title. St. Matthias, which had won five straight league crowns, scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a one-run lead. However, in their final trip at bat, the Guards pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.

Burroughs, which placed second in league last season, finished one game ahead of Crescenta Valley (18-8, 12-2). The Indians received a fine performance Thursday from sophomore pitcher Heather Haynes, who threw a complete-game shutout, striking out 10. The Bulldogs (17-9, 12-2) finish the season tied for second with CV. All three teams will take part in the CIF Southern Section playoffs, which begin next week.

Burroughs volleyball team earns share of league title

1:00 pm, May 7th, 2010 Written by Jeff Tully burbank sports Add a Comment
When the Burroughs High boys' volleyball team was easily swept by host Claremont last month in the teams' first Pacific League meeting, many didn't give the Indians much of a chance of pulling off an upset in the rematch.

There was a good reason for that deduction, as Claremont  is the five-time defending league champion, was undefeated in league and is ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division II.

However, there was a small contingent that thought Burroughs had a chance against the Wolfpack, that being the Indian players and coaches.
Behind a solid attack, Burroughs stepped up Thursday and defeated Claremont at home, 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19.

Burroughs (22-6, 9-1 in league) — in only its fourth year of existence as a program — shares the league championship with the Wolfpack (25-6, 9-1).

It is the school’s first boys’ volleyball league title.
