New Burroughs position for Nicol

Doug Nicol knows a little about running a successful high school program. For 11 seasons, ending in 2004, Nicol helped the Burroughs High girls' basketball team thrive. Along with turning out All-CIF Southern Section athletes, his teams consistently won and were regular participants in the playoffs. Nicol has agreed to return to Burroughs to again take a head-coaching job. However, this time he will be leading the Indians' softball program. Last season under Jose Valle, who stepped down, Burroughs won its first league championship in 28 years.

Burbank softball team falls in World Series title game, 8-6

However, despite suffering a loss on a national stage, the players and coaches of the Burbank Major All-Star softball team were able to make history. Despite a comeback attempt in the bottom of the final inning, the Lady Legends lost to a Southeast team from Warner Robbins, Ga., 8-6, Wednesday in the championship game of the 2010 Little League Softball World Series at Alpenrose Stadium in Portland, Ore. It is the first time a team from the Burbank Little League advanced to a Would Series game in the nine-year history of the organization. The Southeast team made three fine defensive plays during the game that coast Burbank five runs.

The dream season for the Burbank Major Softball All-Star team is still alive. Powered by a big six-run second inning, the locals defeated Tigard, Ore., 10-0, Tuesday in a semifinal game of the 2010 Little League Softball World Series at Alpenrose Stadium in Portland, Ore. The game was halted after four innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. The win puts the Burbank team into the World Series championship game at 4 p.m. today. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2. The locals will take on either Warner Robbins, Ga. or Poland, Ohio. It is the first time a team from the Burbank Little had played for a World Series title. Pitchers Davina Del Castillo and Jade Teetsel combined to limit Oregon to just two hits Tuesday. On offense, Del Castillo was two for two with a triple and two runs batted in.

Burbank Major All-Stars win opening World Series game

The Burbank Major All-Star team is off to a good start in the 2010 Little League Softball World Series. In their opening pool-play game Thursday, the locals stole nine bases and easily defeated Puerto Rico, 18-2, in the contest at Alpenrose Stadium in Portland, Ore. The game was called after five innings because of tyhe 10-run mercy rule. Burbank was paced my Michelle Santiago, who was three for four with a double, three runs batted in and three runs scored, and Kaitlin Okimoto, who was two for three with two walks, a triple, and RBI and three runs scored. Okimoto, Santiago and Bridgette Pisa had two stolen bases each. Burbank took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. However, Puerto Rico came back in its half of the inning to make it, 4-2. The locals poured it on in the third inning, scoring six runs, and added seven runs in the fifth.

The Burbank Major Softball All-Star team is making history. The squad is the only team in the nine-year history of the Burbank Little League to advance to international competition. Fresh from winning the championship of the Western Regional Tournament on Sunday, the locals will be taking part n the 2010 Little League Softball World Series. Ten teams from across the nation and the world will be participating. Burbank will open the tournament at Alpenrose Stadium in Portland, Ore. at 2 p.m. Thursday in an opening pool-play game against Puerto Rico. Burbank won the regional tournament by defeating Oregon, 11-3.

Burroughs girls’ basketball team having fine summer

The Burroughs High girls' basketball team has been enjoying its share of success during the summer. In summer-league play last week, the Indians went 7-1 and advanced to a tournament championship game. In the College of the Canyons Tournament final Saturday, Burroughs lost to Canyon Country Canyon, 45-40. Lisha Elsenbach paced the Indians with 20 points, to go along with six rebounds. Teammate Chelsea Rhamdeow added nine points, five rebounds and three steals and Gabby Pineiro had six points and five rebounds.

Johnson takes over as athletic director at Bell-Jeff

Her exploits on the hardwood at Bellarmine-Jefferson High, in college and in professional basketball are well known at the school.  A former standout All-CIF Southern Section girls' basketball and girls' volleyball player for the Guards, Jaclyn Johnson has kept taps on her alma mater and stayed close to individuals who helped shape her as a person.  Although 13 years removed from Bell-Jeff, Johnson experienced something of a homecoming this week. Taking over for Bryan Camacho, Johnson has been named the school's new athletic director.
