SXSW panel: How the web impacts community journalism

7:42 am, Mar 15th, 2010 Written by Jamie Wetherbe news thoughts Add a Comment
A panel at SXSW Interactive called "Online News of Tomorrow” spent Sunday afternoon discussing where the media is going online. For the most part, the panelists — which included editors from The Huffington Post, The New York Times and various other news outlets — asked questions that couldn’t be answered. Journalists have a vast amount of knowledge that’s condensed into an article — how can we tap that unpublished data in a way that readers can use? Reporters are used to communicating with editors, but should they also learn web skills so their stories can be better displayed online? Should readers, rather than reporters, choose news based on personalized news feeds and algoriums? Should we include key words in articles and write headlines for search-engine optimization to rate higher on the all-mighty Google? News outlets are still finding their footing in the online age, but a good sign for the Glendale News-Press, Burbank Leader and La Canada Valley Sun is that readers seem to appreciate localized content (and even localized advertising). One perk of online is that it allows for more interaction with readers. Comments on blogs and websites get noticed in the newsroom, as do e-mails and letters, so send us feedback.

SXSW panel: More LGBT coverage at the community level

Guerrero/News-Press)"][/caption] SXSW Interactive, which first started in 1994, has become a meeting ground for new ideas, creative technology and, for the most part, all things tech. The forward-thinking event held this week in Austin, Texas, hosted its first LGBT-focused panel this year, and a common complaint from the audience was that community news organizations are dropping the ball on news coverage of gays and lesbians, leaving the reporting to larger cities. While we are L.A.-adjacent, should community newspapers offer more LGBT news? The Burbank Leader recently reported on a couple taking on Proposition 8 and the and the Glendale News-Press ran an article on Moonlight Rollerways’ “Rainbow Skate,” an event for the LGBT community in Glendale. But should we have more coverage? Let us know, we’d like to hear from you.
