Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s soccer team defeated Desert Christian, 4-0, in the semifinals of the CIF Southern California Division III Regional Championships on Wednesday at the Glendale Sports Complex.
Katie Johnson and Breeana Koemans had two goals each to lead the Tologs into Friday’s final at Warren High in Downey, where they will play either Francis Parker or Central Valley Christian.
With just 20 seconds remaining in a first round that he had been dominating, Karen Darabedyan was caught in an armbar by Bart Palaszewski and forced to tap out at the 4:40 mark on Saturday night as part of WEC 47 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
Darabedyan (9-2) landed a barrage of lefts and rights before securing a takedown and using an effective ground and pound for the majority of the round before Palaszewski (34-13) locked in an armbar.
Karen Darabedyan, a Glendale mixed martial arts fighter, tipped the scales at 156 pounds on Friday for his lightweight (155 pounds) fight against Bart Palaszewski (155) on Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio as part of WEC 47: Bowles vs. Cruz.
Darabedyan was over the limit by one pound, which is within regulation.
The 9-1 Darabedyan and Palaszewski will lead off the live telecast of the event on Versus, which is set to begin at 7 p.m.

Darabedyan is scheduled to face Bart Palaszewski in a three-round, lightweight (155 pounds) fight on Saturday at WEC: Bowles vs. Cruz in Columbus, Ohio. The card will be televised live on Versus.
After upsetting third-seeded West Torrance, 1-1 (5-4) in penalty kicks on Thursday, St. Francis High’s soccer team will host Northwood in a CIF Southern Section Division I second-round match on Tuesday.
Northwood, the Sea View League’s No. 2 team, defeated Rancho Cucamonga, 1-0, at home on Thursday.
Crescenta Valley High, Flintridge Prep, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, Glendale Adventist Academy and Holy Family all have girls’ basketball playoff dates on Thursday.
The Falcons, seeded sixth in CIF Southern Section Division I-A, will host Valencia.
Prep, the sixth seed in Division 5-AA, will host St. Matthias.
Sacred Heart, in Division 4-A, will visit Notre Dame Academy, Holy Family will face Providence on the road in 5-AA and Glendale Adventist, in Division 5-AA, will play at Aquinas.
All games are slated for Thursday at 7 p.m. unless both teams agree to a change.
In no big surprise, the Crescenta Valley High girls’ water polo team received the No. 4 seed when playoff brackets were announced Sunday morning for the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs.
The Falcons will host Monrovia in the opening round on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Burbank High.
Glendale also got in, making it as one of four wild-card teams in the division. The Nitros will play at Santa Ynez on Tuesday in a wild-card match. The winner will play on Thursday at Rio Mesa, which is the No. 2 seed.
The CIF recently released a list of at-large boys’ and girls’ basketball teams that petitioned and were granted entry into the playoffs.
In CIF Southern Section Division 3-AA, Hoover High’s boys’ team made it, in Division 4-AA, St. Francis made the cut and in Division 5-A, Renaissance Academy got in.
In girls’ basketball in Division 4A, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy got in.
Mixed martial arts fighter Manny Gamburyan, who trains locally at the Main Event Gym and Glendale Fighting Club among other places, will take on former World Extreme Cagefighting champion Mike Thomas Brown on April 24 in Sacramento as part of the WEC’s first-ever pay-per-view event.

Gamburyan, a former Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran who moved to the WEC to fight in the 145-pound featherweight division, is 2-0 in the WEC.
The card will also feature a lightweight title fight between champion Ben Henderson and Donald Cerrone and be main-evented by featherweight champion Jose Aldo facing former champion and WEC poster boy Urijah Faber.
The WEC confirmed the event and the three top bouts via press release on Wednesday afternoon.
St. Francis High senior standout Dietrich Riley, the three-time reigning All-Area Football Player of the Year, is set to make his decision as to where he will play college football later today.
Riley will make his choice live on ESPNU at 1:30 p.m. as part of the network’s National Signing Day coverage.
Riley, a running back and safety, has been offered scholarship opportunities by nearly ever major university in the land, with UCLA, Notre Dame and LSU expected to be the frontrunners.
Fresh fruits and vegetables and a variety of other items like flowers and sprouts are available at the Glendale Farmers Market on Brand Blvd. on Thursdays.
Toll Middle School students held signs outside the Glendale school after class in support of their teachers. The students do not want their teachers to be laid off at the end of the year.
