From the Los Angeles Times: An Orange County man has been charged by federal authorities with allegedly using malicious software to download sexually explicit photos of scores of women and girls and using those images to extort additional pornographic materials from them, officials said Tuesday. Luis Mijangos allegedly victimized at least 44 girls and 186 women in the so-called sextortion case, according to a 23-page criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. Federal authorities expect the number of victims to grow. Mijangos, a paraplegic wounded in a gang shooting, was being held on $10,000 bail Tuesday after making his first appearance in federal court. Mike Gatto sworn into Assembly; Ramani digs in heels

2:30 pm, Jun 10th, 2010 Written by Dan Evans burbank glendale news Add a Comment
Mike Gatto was sworn-in Thursday to the Assembly even as his Republican opponent, Sunder Ramani, continued to put off conceding the race until thousands of uncounted ballots were tabulated. Gatto (D-Silver Lake) was confirmed during a ceremony at the state capital following his special-election victory on Tuesday over Ramani with 58.7% of the vote. With 100% of precincts reporting, Ramani was behind by 6,155 votes with 41.4% of the vote. “The Assembly, including all of the Republicans, voted to seat me today,” Gatto said Thursday. “If Mr. Ramani has not conceded yet, it’s a shame. It would appear to me that he’s holding out for vanity’s sake. That’s a sad end to the campaign.” ...Continue Reading: Mike Gatto sworn into Assembly; Ramani digs in heels

From the Glendale News-Press & Burbank Leader: Democrat Mike Gatto won a commanding victory in the special election for the 43rd Assembly District seat Tuesday, defeating his Republican opponent by a nearly 20% margin. With 100% of the precincts reporting, Gatto received 20,870 votes, or 58.7%, according to the Los Angeles Registrar/Recorder. Sunder Ramani received 14,715 votes, or 41.4%. A campaign official with Ramani’s campaign, reached early Wednesday morning, said the candidate would make a statement about the election later today. Despite the victory, the campaign continues, as Gatto only has right to his new seat until November. The special election was necessary to replace Paul Krekorian, who left the Assembly in January following his election to the Los Angeles City Council. ... Missing Glendale woman’s online postings reveal other reality

1:11 pm, May 13th, 2010 Written by Dan Evans glendale news Add a Comment
From the Glendale News-Press: At the turn of this year, posts on Nancy Salas’s Twitter account took a darker tone, including one that asked “why do these nightmares keep haunting me”? Two months later, Salas posted “prayers for chelsea king and her family” — a reference to the San Diego honor student at Poway High School who disappeared Feb. 25 while jogging near Lake Hodges. Her body was later discovered buried in a shallow grave. Salas was reported missing Wednesday morning after she failed to return home from her morning job up Chevy Chase Canyon, setting off a massive search. But on Thursday, former classmates said Salas was “not really an avid jogger,” and that she spent a large part of her time involved with campus-based Christian outreach ministries. Four minutes after Chelsea King tweet, Salas posted “Something feels very wrong. Time to meditate on Matthew 6:25-27.” ... Continue Reading

March internal award winners

1:48 pm, Apr 15th, 2010 Written by Dan Evans regional thoughts Add a Comment
Below are the award winners for the month of March. The photos and stories were judged by Orange County Times Community News Editor John Canalis as the best work produced last month by the staffs of the Glendale News-Press, Burbank Leader and La Cañada Valley Sun. Congratulations to everyone. Top Online Teacher surrenders to police By Max Zimbert 23,580 page views Sports Tologs take home title By Gabriel Rizk Comments: I enjoyed the feel-like-you're-there description in this gritty gamer, which clearly meant a great deal to the community. It read more like a story about (American) football than high school girls' soccer. This sets the tone: "But there was nothing ginger or tentative about the 63 minutes of physical, grinding soccer that followed the game's only three goals scored." Photo Glendale police officer dresses as rabbit to catch motorists By Raul Roa Comments: The day this shot was published, I wrote Dan to tell him how jealous I was that we didn't have anything this entertaining going on in O.C. You can't beat drivers failing to stop for a cop in a bunny suit. You just can't. News Ramos opens up on police By Christopher Cadelago Comments: This is the latest chapter in what appears to be a long saga of mismanagement in the Burbank Police Department. Gleaning details from such a cloistered workforce can approach the impossible, but the Burbank Leader has been leading the coverage of this important story.

The best of the newsroom

10:40 am, Apr 8th, 2010 Written by Dan Evans burbank glendale la cañada thoughts Add a Comment
Each month, we choose the best work from our news, sports and photo departments from the three papers that make up Times Community News, North: the Glendale News-Press, Burbank Leader and La Cañada Valley Sun. And, each month, we seem to be a bit more behind than we'd like. So, without further delay, here's the winners of the March contest, honoring the best work of the month prior. The entries were judged by my colleague John Canalis, who is the editor of TCN South — made up of the Daily Pilot, Coastline Pilot and Huntington Beach Independent. Though it may be a break from tradition, we plan on announcing the winners of the April contest — honoring work done in March — in the next few weeks. Stay tuned! Click below to see the winners. Top Online Story Melanie Hicken, Glendale News-Press 'My heart was in the bottom of my stomach' -- 3,488 pageviews News Megan O’Neil, La Cañada Valley Sun Mayor: Mother Nature won today Judge's comments: I chose this one because it provided great detail on a breaking news story in an area that is hard to access during disasters. The writing was crisp and clean and filled with nice description that make the readers feel like they were there: Heavy cement barriers, known as K-rails, put in place in the fall to divert debris flows and protect private property were toppled over and strewn about. Vehicles, some carried several hundred feet, were smashed up against houses and trees. Emergency vehicles had to slalom streets littered with large rocks, branches and mailboxes. Debris traveled as far as south as Foothill Boulevard. The damage was so graphic that even emergency personnel were stopping to take photos. Photo Raul Roa, Glendale News-Press La Cañada Flintridge neighborhood devastated by mudflows This was a tough one. Not only did I love Scott Smeltzer’s ballerina photo, Raul competed against himself with a mess of good storm shots. For some reason, the crushed Toyota truck spoke to me, because it showed the force of the storm and the damage in an undeniable way. I also like the woman and her son but felt that it needed the greater context from the gallery to make sense. The truck photo stands alone quite nicely. Sports Grant Gordon, Glendale News-Press A come back for the books Judge's comments: Everyone loves a comeback story, and I am no exception. This story captured the emotion and had entertaining quotes, particularly this one: “Natalie gave an impassioned speech at halftime that none of the nuns [at Sacred Heart] would want to hear,” Tologs co-Coach Frank Pace said.

Reader gets a date to the prom

10:06 am, Apr 8th, 2010 Written by Dan Evans burbank thoughts Add a Comment
On Wednesday, we published a column in the Burbank Leader that detailed a sweet, albeit unusual, request from Burroughs High senior Brett Reynolds. Many of you have asked about Meaghan Ryan's response. Did she love it? Was she mortified, in that way that only teenagers can be? Did she accept Brett's invitation to prom? I think it's best if I put it in her own words:
Dear Mr. Evans, So its 1:23 a.m., late Wednesday night, and I’m still not quite sure what to say. Well, YES! Of course. But how to say it? Let me go back a little bit. Senior year has been completely awesome; from marching out on the field, to blocking goals in the pool, to late-night studying, I can honestly say I have enjoyed every minute of it. And there has been one constant throughout the year- Brett Reynolds. He has attended all of my events, no matter how hectic the schedule, just to make time to hang out in between it all. He even learned a couple notes on the clarinet just so he could sit in the stands with the rest of the band. I’ve spent so much time with Brett, that I can hardly picture an event without him there. He seems to fit in naturally wherever he is, and he is always in a good mood. The past couple weeks have flown by; sure, a bunch of my friends were planning the best way to ask that special person to prom (I even helped one of them spell out “Jacob, Prom?” in giant letters made of forks on Jacob’s lawn in the middle of the night), or were looking for a date, but I hardly felt the commotion going on amidst all my other activities. But as this week, the week that prom tickets are sold, drew near, I felt a little confused. Did Brett assume we were already going together? (which was fine with me, I just wanted to make sure). Should I plan a mega-fantastic way to ask him? What if he was planning something though and I jumped the gun? There were too many questions, with way too many answers, so I decided to just let things play out. Today was by no means a special day when I woke up. I was running late as usual, scrambling to make it on time to zero-period jazz band. The day continued on in a quotidian fashion — lectures, tests, a quiz and a couple physics problems, followed by after school swim team practice. When I got home, my mom was crying. (My grandma has been in and out of the hospital for a few weeks, and today we received some not-so-great news.) I was in a little bit of shock; I felt like I should cry, but reality didn’t seem to be pounding on my door just yet. So I ate a snack and headed back out the door to band rehearsal. I arrived back home three and a half hours later in the same state of confusion I had left in. My mom still had tears streaming down her face, but she was wearing a slight grin. I walked over to the table she sat at, and glanced down. Was that my picture on the cover of the Leader? Wow. Brett pretty much outdid everyone. It completely made my day, and for sure was way cooler than any other proposal I’d heard about. :) And now its my turn. The Answer. Which will indubitably be yes. I have five hours before I have to be in my seat warming up for jazz band — let’s see what I can come up with. Meaghan Ryan

Start the Presses – It’s all in the asking

10:39 am, Apr 7th, 2010 Written by Dan Evans burbank thoughts Add a Comment
From the Burbank Leader:
No day is the same here at The Leader. When the phone rings or the e-mail pings, it could be just about anyone at the other end. Often people call to suggest stories. Sometimes we follow those suggestions; sometimes we do not. Sometimes people call to with a tip about yet more weirdness at the Burbank Police Department or City Hall. Sometimes they’re right; often they are not. But rarely do I get an e-mail like the one I got last week from Brett Reynolds. Brett, 18, is a senior at Burroughs High School, struggling with a clever way to ask his girlfriend to the prom. He asked if he could get the newspaper to do it. No problem. So, in my newfound Cyrano de Bergerac role (sans the nose), here goes:
