La Cañada boys and girls X-Country edge South Pasadena
La Cañada boys and girls cross-country both won the Rio Hondo League title at Crescenta Valley Park on Thursday, beating South Pasadena to advance to the CIF Prelims next week.
The girls’ race was tight as La Cañada beat South Pasadena by one point, 36-37. (Cross-country, like golf, is designed so the team with the lowest total points wins.) Holly Shreckengast (19 minutes, 29 seconds) and Meghan Fuelling (19:36) finished first and second. They were the only two to break 20 minutes at CV Park; South Pasadena’s Kaylee Anderson finished third with 20:03.
Gabrelle Badie’s sixth place finish (20:34) and Sonja Cwik’s eighth place finish (20:48) turned out to be key difference-makers.
Shreckengast, Fuelling and Badie all had personal records.
Behind the Spartans and the Tigers in team play were Temple City, with 60 points, and San Marino, with 104.
The boys’ had six finishers in the top 10 to beat South Pasadena, 24-34. Leading the way was senior Aayush Shah, who finished in second place at 16 minutes, 21 seconds.
Just ahead of him was South Pasadena’s Sam Pons at 16:13. Pons however was injured in the race when he ran through a tree branch, according to Shah, but was still able to finish the race. Pons was attended to by medical trainers after finishing and had to be carried to the South Pasadena tent.
“He just sprained his ankle during the race,” said Tigers assistant coach Andre Zumaeta. “He was able to finish; I think he’ll be able to run [next week] at CIF.”
After Shah was South Pasadena’s Tyler Ryan (third place, 16:35) and then four consecutive finishes by La Cañada: Adam Skaggs (16:43), Andrew Fisher (16:44), Erick Lankey (16:54) and Johnny Wu (16:57). Anton Cwik (17:13) rounded out the top 10.
San Marino came in third with 83 points, followed by Temple City (92), Monrovia (149) and Blair (178).
