The car's battery died in the right-hand lane, eastbound on Foothill Boulevard, when the driver noticed smoke coming out of the engine compartment.  The cause of the blaze is unknown, authorities said. La Cañada's commercial district seeing growth

5:36 pm, Oct 28th, 2009 Written by Carol Cormaci la cañada Add a Comment
What do Burbank, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica already have that  La Cañada is about to get? A franchised Jersey Mike's sub shop. Started as a single storefront Mike's Subs on the Jersey Shore 53 years ago, it became a franchise operation in 1987.  Hot subs, cold subs, even a sub salad (has everything but the bread), according to its menu. The city says the shop will be open at 707 Foothill, next to Penguin's, before too long.  It remains to be seen if it will steal customers from the venerable Berge's or the Subway franchise down the street. The chief city planner also reports plans are in the works for the improvement of the La Canada Ralphs, the Panera Bread that's planning to open in the Town Center (no firm date has been announced for that opening yet, much to the dismay of many Panera fans), and that a jewelry store will also be one of the occupants at the center. A few months back we learned a Henry's Market was coming to town and will occupy the old Sportland site operated by Sport Chalet on the south side of Foothill. That building was originally a Shopping Bag market, so it's coming full circle. Business is looking up in La Cañada: Robert Stanley, director of community development, says City Hall in September received its "highest monthly count of application submittals in the last two years."

Swine flu vaccine requirements stiffen

5:00 pm, Oct 28th, 2009 Written by Veronica Rocha thoughts 1 Comment
Los Angeles County Public Health officials imposed a stiffer screening process for those seeking the free H1N1 vaccine at community clinics. [caption id="attachment_3531" align="alignright" width="116" caption="Credit: Creative Commons"]Creative Commons[/caption]The screening will allow high-priority groups, including pregnant women, infants and health-care workers, to get the vaccine before others. Demand for the vaccine has exceeded the county's supply, public health officials said. Vaccine clinics that reach maximum capacity before closing will be shut down early, officials said. Review this vaccination form if you're planning to get the county's free shot. To find the closest clinic, visit the county's public health website.

Steve Lopez visits a medical marijuana doctor… in Glendale

4:34 pm, Oct 28th, 2009 Written by Times Community News thoughts Add a Comment
From the Los Angeles Times: Oooh, there's a pinch in my lower back. My head hurts too. And my vision is blurred from going through long lists of Southern California physicians who specialize in herbal medicine. I need relief, and I need it fast, but how does one go about choosing a medical marijuana doctor? "I am a person first, a scientist second and a friend always," a Melrose Avenue doctor says in an ad that can be found in medical cannabis magazines. I suppose there are advantages to having a medical marijuana doctor who is a friend always. But I wasn't really looking for a friend. "Sadly, many of the doctors' offices in our field are shoddy at best," said an ad for a clinic in my neighborhood. "They definitely are not something to gamble on." Good advice, I guess. In the end, I chose a Glendale clinic because it was close to home, offered "superior professionalism" and had an appointment time that worked for me. Click here for the full column.

During the Glendale City Council meeting, the paper, along with a dozen or so other companies and organization, was lauded for its participation in the local Great American Clean Up event. (Check out our coverage here.) Below is a photo of the sponsors, with yours truly in the middle. Residents will also have the opportunity to sign up for volunteer programs. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the high school, 4747 New York Ave., La Crescenta. Suspects at large after two Burbank home invasions

2:11 pm, Oct 28th, 2009 Written by Christopher Cadelago burbank Add a Comment
A pair of recent home invasion-style robberies have police searching for two black men who entered residences and threatened to kill the occupants before making off with their valuables. The duo on Oct. 21 kicked in the front door of a home in the 200 block of Santa Anita Avenue where they were confronted by a 14-year-old girl, police said. The suspects threatened to kill the girl before she was able to lock herself in the bathroom, Burbank Police Sgt. Robert Quesada said. Police arrived on the scene but were unable to locate the suspects, who are described as in their 20s, wearing red hooded sweatshirts, blue jeans and driving a dark-colored vehicle. The invasion came one day after two black men fitting similar descriptions entered a home in the 800 block of East Olive Avenue and ordered the occupant to the floor, police said. They ransacked the residence and took documents from a safe before fleeing the area. Quesada said the victim was unharmed and didn't know who the suspects were.

Possible connection in Burbank bank robberies

2:06 pm, Oct 28th, 2009 Written by Christopher Cadelago burbank Add a Comment
A middle-aged black man who robbed a Burbank Citibank Saturday appears to match the description of a suspect wanted in connection with a nearby bank robbery this summer, authorities said. The suspect, who witnesses described as being between 45 and 50 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall and 150 pounds, walked into the Citibank at 360 E. Magnolia Blvd., handed the teller a note demanding cash and said he had a gun, Burbank Police Sgt. Robert Quesada said. The suspect then made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. The incident closely mirrored the robbery of a downtown Chase Bank Aug. 20 in which the suspect handed over a similar note before being chased across the street by bank security into the Islands Restaurant parking lot at 101 E. Orange Grove Ave., where he was last seen. Officers in both cases arrived within a couple minutes of the robbery and combed the area. In the first robbery the suspect wore a black baseball cap, light blue T-shirt and dark slacks. He had a salt and pepper beard and was carrying a black briefcase, Quesada said. The suspect in the second robbery had a beard, thin build and was wearing a dark blue baseball cap, dark-colored shirt and tight-fitting jeans.
