Vaquero football notebook; Week 7

7:15 pm, Oct 27th, 2009 Written by Gabriel Rizk sports Add a Comment
CHAIDEZ TAKES BACK SEAT IN BACKFIELD Early in the Glendale Community College football team's season, Bellarmine-Jefferson High product Jorge Chaidez was the centerpiece of the Vaqueros' running game, racking up 439 yards in the first three games, including his first career 200-yard game in a Sept. 12 win over East L.A. College. But as the Vaqueros, losers of four in a row, have fallen on lean times, so has Chaidez. Supplanted in the backfield by Joe Wiggan and Willie Youngblood, Chaidez's touches have dwindled and he's averaged just 13 yards rushing per game on 21 carries in the last three contests. In Saturday's 49-3 loss to Bakersfield College, Chaidez had a season-low eight yards on six carries. "The other backs have asserted themselves and done a good job," Glendale Coach John Rome said. "I think there was a time where Jorge was looking for cutbacks and looking for the big run and not hitting the hole and be willing to take the three- and four-yard gains. That kind of slowed him up and the other backs were willing to do that." Chaidez has remained a regular on special teams, returning two kicks for a total of 47 yards on Saturday. PASSING GAME HAS PARTIAL BREAKTHROUGH The Vaqueros passing offense has struggled in conference play, but picked up some steam against Bakersfield. Sophomore quarterback Steve Miller completed 20 of 37 passes for 300 yards and several receivers had big nights. Eudell Clayton led the team with seven catches for 94 yards and Reinaldo Reyes caught two balls with one going for a 71-yard gain. Miller also had two interceptions on a night when the team never got into the end zone.

(Seth Amitin/Valley Sun)[/caption] From the La Cañada Valley Sun La Cañada boys’ water polo could only watch Tuesday afternoon as South Pasadena held possession with 13 seconds left in the second half of overtime and an 8-7 lead. The Tigers beat the Spartans at South Pasadena, 8-7 in overtime, in a tightly contested match with a few lead changes that drastically altered the Rio Hondo League landscape and may have cost La Cañada a chance at a sixth consecutive RHL title. Had the Spartans won, they would have had a two-game lead over SoPas and Temple City with three RHL games to play. It was the first time South Pasadena (14-6, 4-1) beat La Cañada (7-14, 4-1) in seven years. La Cañada Head Coach German Lopez was visibly upset after the game. For more of this story, read here. For the record: An earlier version of this story reported South Pasadena water polo player Sean Grab scored three goals in the game.  He actually scored five.

Glendale, Burbank receive $20 million energy grant

From the Glendale News-Press & Burbank Leader: CITY HALL — The Department of Energy today announced that the cities of Glendale and Burbank  will each receive $20 million to help pay the installation of smart meters that track real-time water and electricity usage. Glendale and Burbank were the only cities in Los Angeles County to receive a share of the $3.4 billion in stimulus funding that President Obama said Tuesday would support similar smart grid and other energy efficiency programs nationwide. The federal windfall would make up a large portion of the estimated $28 million cost of the electric component of Glendale Water & Power’s plan, which is estimated at about $35 million for the installation of both electric and water meters, officials said. [Update] Freeway reopens following early-morning crash

7:54 am, Oct 27th, 2009 Written by Zain Shauk thoughts Add a Comment
BLR.CRASH.1.102709.RR
A big rig truck barreled through a center divider early Tuesday on the Golden State (5) Freeway and caught fire, injuring several motorists and snarling the morning commute after authorities temporarily closed all southbound traffic lanes The truck hit five cars and launched fragments of the wall into two other vehicles as it simultaneously burst into flames, said California Highway Patrol Officer Andre Primeaux. Two people were hospitalized with minor injuries and officials were forced to shut down all southbound lanes immediately following the collisions just north of Alameda Avenue, Primeaux said. “It was a nasty crash,” he said. Jose Romero, of San Diego, lost control of his big rig after he slammed on his brakes to avoid what he said was a loose tire bouncing across the freeway in the early morning darkness. Authorities did not find a tire at the scene and could not confirm why Romero made the sudden change in direction, Primeaux said. “It was such a violent change of events,” Primeaux said. Romero did not appear to be intoxicated and will not be charged with a crime, although he will be cited for violating the state’s Vehicle Code, Primeaux said. All lanes were reopened at 11:14 a.m., according to the CHP. Click here for the full story.
