My friend Annet Peairs over at Roland Communications knows my love of history and sent me a release on an exhibit of the 10 sections, or 40 feet, of the original Berlin Wall commemorating the 20th anniversary of the wall’s fall on Nov. 9. It’s located at 5900 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles.
The wall sections were acquired by The Wende Museum in Culver City, which houses one of the largest collections of German Cold War art and artifacts in the world. The wall separated East and West Germany for 28 years from 1961 to 1989. The wall can be seen for free through Nov. 14. For more information, visit wendemuseum.org / wallproject.org
It was a typical morning. Feed the dog, cats, mom and the turtle. Walk the dog. Jump into the shower. The warm water felt great. I started working the soap across my torso and under my arms. Whoops! What was that? Naw, musta been a large fur ball off one of the cats. My fingers ran across my underarm again more slowly this time. And there it was. A lump. After my shower I showed the lump to mom. She suggested I make an appointment immediately with my ob/gyn, so I called and within an hour I was in his office. He looked at it and said it looked more like an swollen pore that had been aggravated by shaving. It would probably take a week to disolve. But I was sketical. Both my maternal grandmother and first cousin on my Dad’s side died of breast cancer, so I’m deligent about mammograms. I have to be more diligent about monthly self breast exams, but I’m usually too rushed to remember them. But when I hear someone complain about how painful a mammogram is, I tell them my story. My doctor went ahead an oked a mammogram, but within two days the nodule started to shrink and I cancelled the appointment. I was lucky this time.
We have done a series of stories related to breast cancer awareness this month. There are so many things we can do to protect ourselves if only we do them. If you can’t afford a mammogram, call the YWCA in Glendale. They provide funds for women who don’t have insurance or money to take the test. Do the monthly self-breast exams. Eat right. Exercise more. And share what you know with your friends.
Glendale boxer Art “Lionheart” Hovhannesyan has taken a fight on short notice and will fight tonight at the Commerce Casino in the City of Commerce.

Art Hovhannesyan
Hovhannesyan will take on Adrian Navarrette of Mexico in a six-round bout.
According to Hovhannesyan’s camp, it could be the fighter’s toughest test yet, as Navarette’s a power-punching brawler with an 18-7-1 record, having won 14 fights by knockout. He won his previous bout, but has lost four of his last six.
Hovhannesyan’s 9-0-1 with four wins by KO and has won seven in a row with his last two via knockout. He last fought on Sept. 24, winning via TKO against Baudel Cardenas.
A blog with the result of Art’s fight will be up later tonight and a story will appear in Saturday’s paper due to deadline.
During the sixth week of high school football, there were plenty of highlight performances. Here are the week’s best …
1) Justin Posthuma, St. Francis High – While it was in a 28-24 loss, the Golden Knights quarterback’s performance came against a Notre Dame team that’s better than any team any other area squad will face this season. Posthuma completed 18 of 25 passes for 221 yards and also rushed for 103 yards in 13 carries, scoring a touchdown on the ground.

2) Dietrich Riley, St. Francis High – Obviously, like his teammate Posthuma, Riley’s performance came in a loss, but he scored touchdowns on both sides of the ball and picked off Notre Dame quarterback Ryan Kasdorf, the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year, on two straight drives. The first of his two interceptions ended with a 64-yard touchdown return as he totaled 111 yards of returns on the picks. He also ran for 25 yards and a touchdown in nine carries and hauled in seven grabs for 79 yards. To top that off, he added six tackles on defense, as well.
3) Kyle Cota, Crescenta Valley High – The senior quarterback didn’t play close to an entire game in the Falcons’ 41-12 Pacific League throttling of Hoover, but he did more than a full game’s worth of damage. He tossed three touchdowns and ran one in. On the night, he completed seven of nine passes for 193 yards, throwing scores of 17, 61 and one yards. He also had a one-yard touchdown run.
Honorable Mention: I feel compelled to at least give Hoover High receiver Elvis Fuentes some mention, as he hauled in 10 catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to Crescenta Valley.

Glendale starting quarterback Moises Chavez and backup quarterback Richard Anaya recently suffered injuries and are not at full strength.
