(Raul Roa/News-Press) [/caption] With the extended closure of Deukmejian Wilderness Park caused by the Station fire, city officials have said a proposed new hiking trail is more important than ever. The City Council on Tuesday authorized a grant application to the Los Angeles Regional Park and Open Space District for county funding to support the creation of the proposed "Catalina Verdugo Trail.” The new trail, to be located near the Glendale Sports Complex, would provide a trail of modest difficulty with easy access to residents, according to a city report. The city would use youth workers from the Glendale Youth Alliance to help create the trail, according to the proposal. The council on Tuesday was also briefed on efforts to restore Deukmejian Wilderness Park. The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department does not plan to re-seed the park as that has not proven to be a useful solution, said Director George Chapjian. Natural regrowth of the wildlife is expected to take three to five years, officials said. They did not speculate on when the park would reopen to the public.

Daily News editorial board: Paul Krekorian's the one

10:17 am, Oct 21st, 2009 Written by Times Community News burbank glendale Add a Comment
From the Daily News: DECIDING which candidate is best suited and qualified to represent the 2nd District on the Los Angeles City Council has become much easier. The Sept. 22 primary narrowed the field from 10 candidates, down to two. After considering their track records and what they consider important, the Daily News Editorial Board unanimously supports Paul Krekorian in the Dec. 8 runoff election. The job of a City Council member is to balance serving the people of the district with the larger needs of the whole city - making sure constituents get the services and help they deserve, while being a legislator and a policymaker. We believe Krekorian has established a record of doing just that. Read the full editorial here.

Antonovich calls Metrolink union lawsuit 'stupid'

[caption id="attachment_2808" align="alignleft" width="212" caption="Michael Antonovich, Supervisor, L.A. County 5th district"]Michael Antonovich, Supervisor, L.A. County 5th district[/caption] L.A. County Supervisor Mike Antonovich on Tuesday lashed out at a lawsuit filed against Metrolink by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen seeking to halt the installation of video cameras in train cabs. Metrolink spent roughly $1 million installing the cameras in response to the deadly 2008 Chatsworth crash, in which La Crescenta engineer Robert Sanchez allegedly broke policy and text messaged teen enthusiasts around the time of the collision with an oncoming freighter. According to the Los Angeles Times, the union filed a lawsuit, claiming the cameras were an invasion of privacy that violated federal law and provisions of their contract with Metrolink. Antonovich, who sits on Metrolink's Board of Directors with Glendale City Councilman Ara Najarian, issued a statement calling the union's lawsuit "stupid and irresponsible." "The union's troubling message, 'public be damned,' is reckless," Antonovich went on to say. "Police officer, bus drivers and others in the service sector are all subject to video recording in the workplace."

Suicide rate rising in city DOWNTOWN — The number of people who killed themselves in Burbank this year has more than doubled compared with last year, leaving experts to speculate whether the economic slowdown has played a role. School officials lash out at goals BURBANK — Dozens of Burbank Unified School District employees and teachers last week pushed back against proposals to raise student achievement goals even higher than the tough benchmarks met last school year, arguing they had already tapped out available resources to make those gains. GCC defense can’t do it all VALENCIA — In holding College of the Canyons’ offense scoreless for the final 52-plus minutes of Saturday night’s Northern Conference National Division contest at Canyons, the Glendale Community College football team showed it really is just as good, if not better, than its recent string of stellar performances would indicate. Renewed expectations Kordo Doski knew full well what he was getting into when he took over the boys’ soccer program at Providence High.
