How sweet it is to be queen

5:32 pm, Oct 15th, 2009 Written by Michael J. Arvizu Events Add a Comment
On Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 9:30 a.m., we will know who the Rose Queen is for the 121st Tournament of Roses Parade and 96th Rose Bowl Game. I've covered the selection of the Tournament of Roses Royal Court and Rose Queen for the La Cañada Valley Sun for five years. And the paper itself has covered Court and Queen for decades. The naming of the Rose Queen is particularly fun for me to photograph and write about because it allows for one girl to be in the spotlight. Once you're selected as Rose Queen, you're one for life. Sometimes the reactions to this great honor are priceless, as you can see from the following photos. ___________________________________________________________________________ 1930 | Holly Halsted Holly Halsted is saluted as the Tournament of Roses Queen in 1930. Rose Queen Holly Halsted ___________________________________________________________________________ 2003 | Megan Chinen The Rose Princesses react as Megan Chinen, second from left, is named 2004 Rose Queen. The others are, from left, Christina Mills, Laura Stassel and Stephanie Barnes. She receives hugs from court princesses Eliza Walper of Polytechnic, Alyssa Jones of Pasadena City College and Michelle Corral of Flintridge Prep. (Tammy Abbott/News-Press) Queen Camille Clark ___________________________________________________________________________ 2006 | Mary McCluggage This was a split second reaction from Rose Queen Mary McCluggage reacting as she hears her name being called by Tournament of Roses President Paul L. Holman announcing her as the Rose Queen for the 2007 Tournament of Roses Parade.  (Michael J. Arvizu/Valley Sun) Rose Queen Mary McCluggage ___________________________________________________________________________ 2007 | Dusty Gibbs Dusty Gibbs, center, reacts to being named the 2008 Tournament of Roses Rose Queen. This year probably marked the first time we ran a photo of the newly-announced Rose Queen without actually seeing her face, but I really enjoyed seeing her reaction, plus the reaction of Rose Princess Kelsey MacDougall reaching over to embrace her. I like how she seems to look around as if making sure she heard correctly. Or perhaps she's just gasping? (Michael J. Burbank Leader poll

5:09 pm, Oct 15th, 2009 Written by Times Community News thoughts Add a Comment
Poll results: Residents threatened by tree branches seek claims for damages, but are often deferred to small-claims court. Should the city be held more accountable for falling branches?chartBL (1) No. Only if the city creates or maintains dangerous conditions and has been notified to correct the problem. (21 votes, 34%) (2) Yes. The city needs to do a better job of policing public spaces instead of waiting for limbs to fall. (41 votes, 66%) Current poll: A city commission has blocked the promotion of a Burbank Police lieutenant because he was named in an FBI probe into excessive force allegations. Do you agree with the commission? No. The commission hasn’t denied this kind of promotion before. Let the police promote who they choose. Yes. The commission shouldn’t appoint someone who might be prosecuted for police misconduct, even if it means they don’t have all positions filled. Cast your vote now at BurbankLeader.com.

Bell-Jeff football team faces toughest test of the year in league opener

4:19 pm, Oct 15th, 2009 Written by Jeff Tully sports Add a Comment
Bellarmine-Jefferson High's Galen Quintero makes a tackle (Libbu Cline/The Leader). FOOTBALL PREVIEW BELL-JEFF VS. ST. GENEVIEVE WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday. WHERE: Memorial Field (Burroughs High). RECORDS: The Guards are 4-2; the Valiants are 6-0. LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff defeated Silver Valley, 36-24; St. Genevieve defeated Frazier Mountain, 50-39. OUTLOOK: This is likely the most important game of the season for Bell-Jeff. The contest could also determine the Santa Fe League champion, as the Valiants won the title last season and the Guards finished second. Bell-Jeff will be taking on a team that has yet to experience defeat this season. Looking at the results from the teams’ common opponents this season, it appears the Guards are in for a tough battle. Both squads have faced Malibu and Frazier Mountain in nonleague games earlier in the year. While the Guards lost to the Sharks, 20-18, and the Falcons, 52-14, the Valiants earned 43-26 and 50-30 victories against the same squads. St. Genevieve has had by far the most potent offense in the league during the first six games. The team has outscored its opponents, 262-111, and averages 43.6 points a game. In contrast, the Guards have scored an average of 29.3 points a game. The Valiants have a fine athlete in senior Chris Navarro. As a quarterback, Navarro has completed 46 of 72 passes for 668 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions. Not only can the Valiants pass the ball, but they also have a solid running game behind Navarro, who operates the option to perfection. He has gained 901 yards in 76 carries and has an eye-popping 21 touchdowns. Bell-Jeff’s biggest offensive weapon is junior wide receiver Micah Shirley. Shirley has 39 catches for 588 yards and eight touchdowns. Teammate Kevin Yuenyonskul has 17 catches for 356 yards and five touchdowns. The Guards have gotten a great effort this season from senior linebacker Alex Davidians. Going into Friday’s game, Davidians was fourth in the state in tackles with 89, according to maxpreps.com. SOMETHING INTERESTING: The Valiants are ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Northeast Division and the Guards are ranked No. 7 in the same division.

VIDEO: Boy to prez: Why do people hate you?

4:14 pm, Oct 15th, 2009 Written by Max Zimbert thoughts Add a Comment
Leave it to children to say what everyone's thinking. Today in New Orleans, a fourth-grader asked President Obama why everyone hates him. "One party feels like they need to poke you, keep you on your toes," Obama said. "When things are tough, you're gonna get some of the blame. I'm a tough guy. Are you a tough guy? You look pretty tough." The crowd was friendly and lapped it up. However this fourth-grader might be the target of Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity soon. When he asked Obama why he's hated, he added, "They're supposed to love you." Indoctrination? I interview plenty of folks in Glendale who'd say yes. Safety tip of the day

4:10 pm, Oct 15th, 2009 Written by Veronica Rocha thoughts Add a Comment
I was visiting Glendale Fire Station 25 today for an earthquake preparedness story and got a pretty interesting tip from engineer Tony Castro. If you keep water in an emergency kit, it should be thrown out every two years because the chemicals in the water go bad. Water should be thrown out when the expiration date is up, he said. Who would have thought that bottled water can actually go bad? Not me. [caption id="attachment_862" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Creative Commons"]Creative Commons[/caption]

Loretta, Castro a go for NLCS

3:27 pm, Oct 15th, 2009 Written by Gabriel Rizk sports Add a Comment
Mark Loretta had only one plate appearance for the Los Angeles Dodgers in their three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2009 National League Division Series. But it's likely the significance and timeliness of his one hit were a factor when Manager Joe Torre penciled the former St. Francis High standout onto the active roster for the National League Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies beginning at 5:07 p.m. PDT today at Dodger Stadium. loretta Loretta, who made the team for the best-of-seven series with the defending World Series champions, along with fellow utitlity infielder and Glendale resident Juan Castro, singled in the winning run with the bases loaded and two outs in the Dodgers' 3-2 Game Two victory on Oct. 8. Castro, who, like Loretta, is making his second career appearance in the postseason, did not enter a game in the Division Series.
