On Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 9:30 a.m., we will know who the Rose Queen is for the 121st Tournament of Roses Parade and 96th Rose Bowl Game.
I’ve covered the selection of the Tournament of Roses Royal Court and Rose Queen for the La Cañada Valley Sun for five years. And the paper itself has covered Court and Queen for decades.
The naming of the Rose Queen is particularly fun for me to photograph and write about because it allows for one girl to be in the spotlight. Once you’re selected as Rose Queen, you’re one for life. Sometimes the reactions to this great honor are priceless, as you can see from the following photos.

This was a split second reaction from Rose Queen Mary McCluggage reacting as she hears her name being called by Tournament of Roses President Paul L. Holman announcing her as the Rose Queen for the 2007 Tournament of Roses Parade. (Michael J. Arvizu/Valley Sun)

2007 | Dusty Gibbs
Dusty Gibbs, center, reacts to being named the 2008 Tournament of Roses Rose Queen. This year probably marked the first time we ran a photo of the newly-announced Rose Queen without actually seeing her face, but I really enjoyed seeing her reaction, plus the reaction of Rose Princess Kelsey MacDougall reaching over to embrace her. 2008 | Courtney Lee
Arcadia High School student Courtney Lee reacts after being named Rose Queen of the 120th Tournament of Roses Parade. I like how she seems to look around as if making sure she heard correctly. Or perhaps she’s just gasping? (Michael J. Arvizu/Valley Sun)

(2) Yes. The city needs to do a better job of policing public spaces instead of waiting for limbs to fall. (41 votes, 66%)

Yes. The commission shouldn’t appoint someone who might be prosecuted for police misconduct, even if it means they don’t have all positions filled.

Leave it to children to say what everyone’s thinking. Today in New Orleans, a fourth-grader asked President Obama why everyone hates him.
“One party feels like they need to poke you, keep you on your toes,” Obama said. “When things are tough, you’re gonna get some of the blame. I’m a tough guy. Are you a tough guy? You look pretty tough.”
The crowd was friendly and lapped it up. However this fourth-grader might be the target of Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity soon.
When he asked Obama why he’s hated, he added, “They’re supposed to love you.”
Indoctrination? I interview plenty of folks in Glendale who’d say yes.

I was visiting Glendale Fire Station 25 today for an earthquake preparedness story and got a pretty interesting tip from engineer Tony Castro.
If you keep water in an emergency kit, it should be thrown out every two years because the chemicals in the water go bad.
Water should be thrown out when the expiration date is up, he said.
Who would have thought that bottled water can actually go bad? Not me.

Mark Loretta had only one plate appearance for the Los Angeles Dodgers in their three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2009 National League Division Series. But it’s likely the significance and timeliness of his one hit were a factor when Manager Joe Torre penciled the former St. Francis High standout onto the active roster for the National League Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies beginning at 5:07 p.m. PDT today at Dodger Stadium.

Loretta, who made the team for the best-of-seven series with the defending World Series champions, along with fellow utitlity infielder and Glendale resident Juan Castro, singled in the winning run with the bases loaded and two outs in the Dodgers’ 3-2 Game Two victory on Oct. 8.
Castro, who, like Loretta, is making his second career appearance in the postseason, did not enter a game in the Division Series.
