At last night’s City Council meeting, self proclaimed “gadfly” Mike Mohill offered to take on the city’s investment portfolio in lieu of paying the $100,000 for financial reported services requested by the city’s Treasurer Ronald Borucki.
During oral communications, Mohill railed against the city’s spending. After questioning a number of Glendale Water & Power contracts, he rested his sights on a $100,000 contract the City Council approved with Bloomberg Financial Services.
Bloomberg provides real-time online financial data services, which the city treasurer uses to access investment news and information and communicate with brokers, according to the city report.
“He wants $100,000? I’ll do it for free,” Mohill said.
The city didn’t take him up on his offer.

The media world has been abuzz recently regarding TMZ founder Harvey Levin — though not for the usual reasons. Los Angeles Sheriff’s deputy investigators recently obtained phone records from the gossip journalist, attempting to find out who provided Levin details about Mel Gibson’s 2006 anti-Semitic rank during a drunk-driving arrest.
First Amendment defenders — if I may be so bold — say this is patently illegal. Law enforcement officials say it’s completely proper. Now, you may virulently disagree with Levin’s ways and methods, but keep this in mind: Most free speech law in this country has been shaped or created by less-than-sympathetic individuals. Besides, TMZ is based in Glendale, and I feel a need to stick up for the locals.
Though I have no idea whether Levin will be speaking about the issue, he will be speaking about something next week at a Radio and Television News Association event. Details are below.

Rebecca Salvo and Rachel Salvo, who both graduated from Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in 2006, are set to make their return to Southern California, as they will participate in the Cal Lutheran Tournament in Thousand Oaks on Friday and Saturday as members of the Haverford College women’s volleyball team.
The Fords are scheduled to take on Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd Scripps at Gilbert Arena on Friday before facing La Verne and host Cal Lutheran on Saturday.
The Salvos led Sacred Heart to a CIF Division IV-AA semifinal appearance in 2006 before embarking on distinguished careers at Haverford, where they are now seniors. The Fords are currently 19-2 on the season and 5-0 in the Centennial Conference.
Office vacancy rates climbed to 19.4% in Glendale and 17.7% in Burbank through the third quarter of 2009, according to the most recent data published today by real estate firm Grubb & Ellis.
The rates were 17.2% in both cities, according to the firm’s second-quarter report, but experts say recent construction caused the additional rise in Glendale.
The completion of a 188,000-square foot property at 207 Goode Ave. caused the rise in Glendale’s empty space, although that was countered somewhat by 18,590 square feet of newly rented space.
This is the second consecutive quarterly rise in office vacancies for both cities. A year ago, 5% of Burbank office space was vacant and the rate was 14.8% in Glendale, according to the report.
Check back Tuesday for extended coverage of local office real estate markets.
I took the Glendale (2) Freeway to the Ventura (134) Freeway junction to get to work today and noticed an SUV had crashed into bushes.
That crash was one of many seen on highways during the recent rains.
More than 180 traffic collisions were reported from midnight to 6 a.m. today on local roadways, according to the California Highway Patrol, compared to 19 collisions a week ago.
The Humane Society of America claims that Glendale-based International House of Pancakes doesn’t use “cruelty-free” eggs.
So the Humane Society is now asking the public to urge the restaurant chain to stop using eggs from caged hens.
The humane society claims the restaurant chain is using eggs from hens that are raised in extremely confined spaces.

The city, anticipating heavy rains across the region, has allocated 25 sandbags per resident. The sandbags can be picked up weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 124 S. Lake St.
Residents need to bring proof of business or residency in Burbank, such as a utility bill or driver’s license.
If the office is closed and there is an active rainstorm, sandbags may be left at the front gates. Hours may be extended in emergency situations.
